Dylan O'Brien and Glimmer

I’ve always said I thought Dylan would have a great career and it’s nice to see him getting more attention/notice, that said I’m much more concerned about this Glimmer project than the Maze Runner. I mean, career-wise, maybe doing another YA sci fi thriller might not showcase his best range. I would think maybe a comedy (like the Intern) but one where he’s got a significant/starring role might be better.

Anyway, beyond that, though, let’s talk about a Jan shoot time for Glimmer. Most movies like that have about a 3 month shoot. This year, they shot the first 12 eps of Teen Wolf from Dec-March, which would place it right when Glimmer is set to shoot. That means:

1) TW S4 isn’t going to start in June like the first 3 years, or

2) they are going to shoot around his schedule A LOT (which makes no sense because that’s a huge time to shoot around) or

3) there’s not going to be a S4 of Teen Wolf or

4) Dylan will not be in S4 of Teen Wolf at all

Of those options, I’m hoping #1 is most likely, that if they have a Jan-March air time for the back 12 eps of S3 (which means shooting July/Aug - Nov/Dec), then they won’t start S4 until later in the summer meaning they don’t start shooting until around March, so he could start filming Glimmer in Jan and be back in time to shoot S4 or only have his schedule rearrange things a little. This sort of seems to correspond with the article saying the Glimmer people were willing to wait until Jan to start filming, indicating it was to accommodate his filming schedule (presumably for TW).

The thing is, because the 24 ep season is split into 2 halves, I don’t think MTV has to decide about a S4 until next fall, and depending on Dylan’s contract… Well, if he’s not contracted through S5 (Davis says he has ideas through 5 I think) then someone at MTV contracting doesn’t do their job well, given Dylan’s unknown status when he first started on Teen Wolf. The thing is, we kind of already know their contract department is a mess (I recall last fall people saying - without stating sources I must add though - that Hoechlin, Holland, etc weren’t officially contracted for S3 either), so… If he has a lot of movie offers coming in, I could see Davis not stopping him because he wants Dylan to succeed and him just asking that Dylan sign on to come back for a few eps here and there, but not every one. But a mostly Stiles-less TW is extremely unappealing to me.

I don’t know, I wish Dylan the best and I hope he’s able to do movies and Teen Wolf both for a very long time. And him getting offered parts is something we’ve all known would happen. I just don’t want to lose him from Teen Wolf just yet.

If S3 part deux does the summer/winter run instead of the summer/fall run, then it seems like that would work with Dylan’s schedule. I think summer shows (or series that intended to be summer shows) tend to get more flexibility in scheduling. Even if Teen Wolf ran starting in July 1 this year (a Monday), it would end by Sept 16, which is just before all the fall series premier.

Yeah, MTV contracts is a mess, but I’m (perhaps naively) optimistic about Dylan for the following reasons:

1) Jeff and Dylan’s relationship. Err there’s no way to make that not sound weird/creepy, but it’s pretty obvious Jeff has a different relationship with Dylan than he does with Posey, which I’m assuming is also the type of relationship he has with the rest of the cast: on good terms with your boss. However, the way Jeff talks to/about Dylan clearly indicates that he sees Dylan as someone he’s mentoring, and the juxtaposition is most plainly evident when he does cons with just Posey or with Dylan and Posey.

This is compared to Colton or Gage who, regardless of how friendly they were with the cast and crew, probably saw TW as a paycheck (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I don’t know how much Dylan reciprocates that feeling of being the mentee, and I’m not Dylan, so I can’t really speak for him, but do I think most people in his position would at least have some sort of relationship with a mentor. So I’m thinking Jeff probably has more influence over Dylan’s career decisions (at least regarding whether or not to leave TW) than he did for Colton’s who been in the biz and has had a team make decisions for him.

2) Which means if Jeff lets Dylan go without any fight, Dylan probably would, but I also kind of doubt Jeff would do that. I mean, obviously as Dylan’s mentor, he is delighted at and encouraging about all the opportunities Dylan gets, but Jeff is also the showrunner, and thinking from a wider perspective, letting Stiles leave would really hurt the show in two ways:

— I know we’ve had a lot of fandom fights about this, and how TW is about The Teen Wolf Scott McCall, but TW is a lot more like the Avengers than Iron Man 3. Viewers watch TW for reasons not limited to watching The Teen Wolf Scott McCall do stuff, and I think Jeff is cognizant of the fact that he’d lose a good chunk of viewership if Stiles were gone.

— Jeff keeps talking about endgame and big picture for TW, and I think we’ve all figured out now that that’s less rigid than he implies it is (or else we would’ve all been fucked when Colton left), but I think Stiles’ story arc is a lot more integral to the overarching plot than Jackson’s necessarily is (or harder to write out). I think, given a choice, Jeff wouldn’t let Stiles go if he didn’t have to.

As of right now, he seems to be indicating to Dylan that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to work around his schedule and keep him on the project.

I mean, in general, it’s unclear how long Teen Wolf is going to last. If Jeff had a 5-part story plan, and S3 is going to be parts 3 and 4, then it wouldn’t it makes sense that S4 could be the last too? Also, what elements are going to be the themes once we run out of the basic elementals :| And this isn’t a criticism of the other shows, but I do think there can be too much of a good thing and I don’t want TW to get Smallville/SPN’d. I think a 4/5 season run would be great for the series (and I’m guessing by that point, the actors’ contracts would be asking for more than MTV is necessarily willing to pay since the Nielsen viewership doesn’t seem to be going up by that much and making the series is going to get increasingly expensive). So I think if there is a clear end in sight, Dylan might be more willing to wrap up his work with TW before gracing up with his presence on the big screen 100% of the time

ETA Though I just want to add, a graceful place for Dylan to exit would probably be after senior year, if/when they go to uni, if Jeff intends to continue the series and Posey is still on board. This could be as early as the end of S4, if S3 is junior year only and S4 is senior year. The only way I see Dylan leaving at the end of S3 is if Stiles gets killed off, and I can’t imagine that being a place Jeff would want to end at… especially with a fan-favourite character.

Little bastards have few or no natural predators, so they are very chill. I had to pick one up once and put it in a safer place (it was on the ground, maybe had been stunned) and it just hopped right into my hands and stayed calm until I put it back down.
